Depleted Import Duties

The Cameroonian government has exempted tax on EVs to uplift sales. The government has spared the excise duties for EVs, which formerly had an import rate of 12.5%. Moreover, the government has also given a 50% reduction in the taxes on recently imported EVs, motorcycles, EV batteries, and the charging stations of the newly imported EVs. These tax exemptions will be applied for the next 24 months. Lower import duties will help Cameroonian auto dealers import EVs from different countries, including Chinese automotive suppliers.

Subsidized EV Charging

EV charging has been subsidized by the Cameroonian government, which has supported the growth of EVs in the country. However, there is a significant lack of industrial support in building charging stations.

Until now, there have been only three locations where EVs can be charged in Cameroon. These charging stations are located in Douala and Yaoundé. However, the government has expressed its intent to expand the network in the coming days.

Reduced Maintenance Cost

The Cameroon automotive market has been very responsive since the importation of EVs. EVs are highly beneficial when it comes to energy efficiency, and it has a significantly reduced maintenance cost. For traditional cars, the initial upkeep costs are very high. So, people can take an alternative way to buy an EV.
Whether dealerships are getting electronic Geely, BYD or SAIC, they can be guaranteed of the fact that neither these cars are going to cost them a fortune nor will they require high maintenance. Needless to say, this brings down the maintenance cost to a great extent. Compared to the standard cars with combustion engines, these EVs work very well while consuming less energy.  

Environmental Concerns

There are huge environmental benefits of EVs, making it a perceived action from the Cameroonian buyers. The government wants to make EVs a go-to transportation option for Cameroonians because EVs are very environmentally friendly. One of the reasons for choosing EVs is because of their negative carbon emissions. EV exporting countries, Germany, Belgium, and China, are some of the effective options from which Cameroon can import EVs. There are several Chinese automotive suppliers catering to the needs of Cameroonian dealerships.

The Cameroonian government is making progress in line with the Paris Agreement and other international treaties. Therefore, Cameroon is committed to taking a greener option for transportation, including electric Chinese cars from Geely, BYD, etc.
